State of the Stream for July: Twitch’s growth streak continues, ibai sets new record, and Teamfight Tactics soars

--

Welcome to the State of the Stream where we share the latest streaming data around platforms, content creators, and related trends. The following report features narratives crafted by StreamElements based on data courtesy of our friends at Rainmaker.gg.

Twitch has longest growth streak in past 4 years

The amount of hours watched per day on Twitch is known to fluctuate throughout the year based on data that goes back to 2020. Now, after 5 months of upward momentum, the platform has achieved its longest streak of consecutive daily growth in this four year period.

  • March: 55,033M hours
  • April: 55,642M hours
  • May: 56,901M hours
  • June: 56,919M hours
  • July: 57,312M hours

Based on the past five months, July’s month-over-month hours watched also hit a high note with 1.777B.

Or Perry, co-founder of StreamElements, summarized it as such:

“Setting a new streak, Twitch’s daily hours watched continued to climb since March with its monthly hours reaching a peak during the same period. Since this is the first time July had more viewership than May in the past four years, it could signal that Twitch has regained the footing it lost when the quarantine boom ended.

Helping to drive up the numbers was ibai’s record-setting boxing event that attracted over 3.4 million viewers and put him in the top spot for the first time this year.”

Teamfight Tactics patches its way into the top 10

The top 10 categories on Twitch was full of growth this month with no debuts dethroning the usual suspects. While Teamfight Tactics has hovered between the top 15–25 all year long, the release of Patch 13.13 and 13.14 has energized the player base to propel it into the #7 spot.

ibai sets a new Twitch record and also takes crown

It’s been over a year since TheGrefg set a Twitch viewership record with over 3.4M tuning into his stream. Adding close to a million more viewers to set a new record was ibai with his popular La Velada del Año III event. This annual boxing extravaganza features content creators duking it out and musical performances.

The event also elevated ibai into the #1 streamer spot which marks the second consecutive month of a new king on the throne since it was abdicated by xQc (who is now splitting his time between Twitch and Kick).
