State of the Stream for March 2024: Twitch remains steady QoQ, Gaules is back on the throne, and Supermarket Simulator soars

Welcome to the State of the Stream, where we share the latest streaming data around platforms, content creators, and related trends. The following report features narratives crafted by StreamElements based on data courtesy of our friends at Rainmaker.gg.

Twitch’s hours watched rose 2% quarter-over-quarter

Monthly Hours Watched on Twitch

Twitch continues to have few peaks and valleys, with only a 2% increase in hours watched quarter-over-quarter. In Q4 2023, Twitch had 5.3 billion hours watched and exceeded it in Q1 2024 with 5.4 billion.

Daily Hours Watched on Twitch

While a dip in daily hours watched is more meaningful since it is not impacted by the number of days in a month, March has consistently been much lower in viewership than February for at least the last five years.

CS:GO ups its viewership with the PGL CS2 Major

When any of the top 10 chart regulars host competitive events, it’s always a big draw, as Counter-Strike illustrates. Its PGL CS2 Major helped boost its viewership by 53%.

Not to be outdone, the surprise indie hit Supermarket Simulator shot up to the #15 spot among the top games, representing a 454% increase in hours watched. This viewership rocket was propelled by popular streamers, including ironmouse, Rubius, and akamikarubi, who dedicated much stream time to it.

Supermarket Simulator

StreamElements co-founder Or Perry had this to say about the latest State of the Stream report:

“There were few surprises about Twitch this month since their daily hours watched drops yearly in March, and the top 10 games and streamers were the usual suspects. One notable exception was the blistering rise of Supermarket Simulator. Niche indie games rarely crack the top 20, but thanks to top streamers, including ironmouse, who dedicated 73 hours to it compared to 5 hours in February, it soared up the charts to the number 15 spot, illustrating the impact of influencers.”

Gaules returns to the top for the first time this year

Gaules is no stranger to the top 10 and was among the elite 3 who wore the crown the most in 2023. 2024 has been up for grabs, with fps_shaka dominating in January and Jynxzi in February. With March being a big month for CS:GO and that game being Gaules’ jam, it’s no surprise he’s back on the throne. He spent 496 hours streaming it in March compared to 474 in February.
