State of the Stream: Kick Edition with month-over-month data for 2023 and top games & streamers in April

Welcome to the State of the Stream where we share the latest streaming data around platforms, content creators, and related trends. The following special report on Kick features narratives crafted by StreamElements based on data courtesy of Streams Charts.
Kick kicks it up a notch on the viewership front

Kick’s beta experienced a 44% increase in hours watched in April going from 35.8M to 51.8M, which is an impressive month-over-month leap. The giant lift came from their mobile app which was released at the end of March.
Active channels are also on the rise

A platform needs viewers and creators, with Kick seeing recent growth on both fronts. Their active channels more than doubled in April, going from 23.9K to 66.9K.
Gil Hirsch, CEO/Co-founder of StreamElements, made this observation:
“It takes time to determine if a new platform will have long term success since there eventually needs to be an audience for the middle class of streamers and not just the stars. Kick’s current beta is showing impressive momentum in terms of channel and viewer growth, so the question now is if they stay on track will they be rolling out more engagement, monetization, and moderation features and be able to effectively serve a larger creator pool and global audience with high resolution, low latency video.”
Non-Gaming content is a big draw and differentiator

With the exception of Just Chatting, Twitch’s top 10 is almost exclusively comprised of gaming categories, while Kick has found non-gaming content to be a key selling point with its audience. This includes Just Chatting, Pools, Hot Tubs & Bikinis, Other, Watch Party, and Music. There are also several games in their top 10, only three of which crossover with Twitch’s chart (GTA, Fortnite, and Apex Legends).
As seen on Twitch

Many of Kick’s chart leaders were formerly popular Twitch streamers. This includes AdinRoss, Trainwreckstv, ROSHTEIN, and Destiny, among others. Although no women have cracked the top 10, shadowsovari came close at #22.
